What is the best way to cut cast iron pipe. I have a 4 inch cast iron drain pipe that is in the wall and runs into the floor in the basement. Its nearly impossible to break a cobalt steel twist bit on cast iron. With chalk draw a line around the pipe where you want to cut it, put the edge of the chisel on the line and hammer the end of it. Either of these substances will cut right through the metal without becoming dull too quickly. Drill a hole in the cast iron pipe.

Added to that, making a repair means we have to cut out a piece of the pipe that is leaking and replace that section with pvc pipe. Actually, the crack is so large you could call it a hole about two feet tall, and 1/3 the width of the pipe. If you dont keep it steady in the cut the blade will destructively disintegrate with a loud bang.
Chain cutters are for cast iron pipe and not much else since they rely on the brittleness of the pipe to do their work. Cast iron's strength and reduced frictional wearing allow these and other products to have a long life. You then apply the epoxy putty by pushing it into the hole or crack in the pipe.
So my favorite tool for that nasty job is a grinder equipped with a diamond blade. So with that mind, its more than likely any system made of cast iron will need to be replaced in the next five to 20 years (closer to five than 20, by the way). Nodular and malleable cast irons are tougher , but still easier to cut than steel.
An angle grinder with a metal blade will cut most of it, you need access all around the pipe. Create a marking line and use the hammer and chisel to score the line around the pipe. You simply cut off the required amount of epoxy putty from the stick and knead it by hand.
Spread the handles of the cutter apart and hook the chain into the notch on the free handle. If you dont have a crawl space and you cant do the reroute option then your next best choice is to replace the cast iron pipes in the existing locations. Not likely to be white iron.
Cast iron in it pure state is called grey cast or pig iron and in bygon times was used to tip cutting tool because it is one of the hardest metals they had.normaly cast iron is very easy to cut and drill as the carbon acts like wax ,but if the iron as been chilled when made or quenched in water it reverts back to gray cast iron.ps this also happens when casting thin pipes like drain pipes. Grip the drill firmly while you use it. Even if the cast isnt hot, the friction will build heat quickly.
The plastic makes much more noise than cast iron. The traditional method used most of the time to clean cast iron pipes is a drain snake with cable and blades. This is primarily noticed in walls where the upper floors drain vertically to lower floors.
Johnpost april 13, 2013, 4:06pm #9. Bath tubs, plumbing pipes and skillets are a few of the products manufactured with cast iron. Luckily cast iron pipes are fairly brittle so it should break easily.
Cut iron pipe with a hammer and chisel this is a very good way to cut iron pipe.
